Where are you with your holiday preparations?
Thanksgiving arrived, and we’re on the home stretch to the Christmas. But, with the gift-giving, the cooking, the decorations and the parties, the holidays can be more work than fun. For most of us, the holidays come with its own “to-do” list.
Planning for the holidays can leave us feeling impatient, cranky, and depressed at times. We have high expectations and sometimes stretch ourselves beyond our limits. Stress can result when the realities of our day-to-day life conflict with our efforts to make the holiday season perfect.
Ways to reduce stress during the holidays:
- Make a change. Take one task that drives you crazy during the holidays and tackle it in a new way.
- Know when to say no. Say yes to meaningful events otherwise, you may end up feeling resentful and overwhelmed.
- Keep gatherings small and intimate. Get together with a few of your closest friends or relatives for the holidays.
- Take advantage of timesavers. Order your local deli’s tangy side salad or the bakery’s pumpkin pie to complement your main course.
- Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Most guests prefer to take on some small tasks, instead of standing around while you attempt to do everything yourself.
- Bring along a positive attitude. Plan ahead and be prepared for the unexpected. The holidays don’t have to be perfect.
- Choose travel-proof gifts. Make it easy on yourself and give gift certificates.
- Remember to have fun. Take a deep breath and savor the moment. There’s so much to be grateful for.
Make relaxation time a priority. Make time for downtime and give your mind a break. Relaxation isn’t only about resting your body, resting your mind is just as important. When we give our mind a break from certain thoughts, we often return with greater clarity.

“This is my wish for you: peace of mind, prosperity through the year, happiness that multiplies, health for you and yours, fun around every corner, energy to chase your dreams, joy to fill your holidays!” – D.M. Dellinger
“It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.” – Agnes M. Pharo
