Do you want to live life to the fullest or are you content to just go along with the crowd and settle for whatever comes your way?
One of the greatest myths that is pervasive in our culture today is the idea that we’re entitled to a great life, and that somehow, somewhere, someone is responsible for filling our lives with continual happiness, exciting career options, nurturing family time, and blissful personal relationships simply because we exist.
But we’re all responsible for the life we live.
If you’re ready to make that change and live your life to the fullest, here are 7 success steps:
It starts with a dream. One of the main reasons why most people don’t get what they want is because they haven’t decided what it is they want. A lot of people dream small or don’t dream at all, unsure of what they are truly capable of. You really can achieve anything you want from life. You just need to be prepared to work hard, take action and keep pushing through when things get tough.
Turn your dream into measurable goals. Dreams can be powerful, encouraging and even a bit scary. But a dream alone isn’t going to get you far. Write down your dream, come up with one clear goal, then set some deadlines. It’s much easier to hit your goals when you’re working towards a deadline.
Create a game plan and a timetable. If you are going to be successful in creating the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. Don’t just go through the motions day in and day out tackling unimportant tasks; instead, turn your goal into specific steps. A challenge to reaching goals is that often the due date is so far away, many people put off taking action until it’s too late.
Make a commitment. Whether you call it self-esteem, self-confidence or self-assurance, you need a deep-seated belief that you have what it takes; the abilities, inner resources, talents, and skills to create your desired results. Keeping commitments is hard because the person who made the commitment is long gone by the time you need to carry it out. The point of a commitment is basically issuing a contract between all the various versions of yourself.
Take full responsibility. Everything about you is a result of your doing or not doing. You are in complete control of the quality of your life, and when you fail to take responsibility you put yourself at a clear disadvantage. Have unwavering faith in yourself, for good and bad, and make the decision to believe that you create all your experiences.
Expect adversity. Don’t buckle in the face of adversity. The fact is, adversity comes to everybody and it’s not always a sign that there’s something wrong with you or your life. Adversity is part of every great journey. Failure and rejection can be a miserable place, so look beyond the immediate situation to a point in time when the problem will no longer exist. Focus on what you can control.
Give “110 percent.” You don’t get any extra points for grunting and groaning. Be in charge of your own attitude, decisions, and actions. Surround yourself with those who challenge and/or encourage your efforts and make every effort to better your skills and improve your quality of life constantly.
Regardless of personal circumstances, economic climates, and access to resources, it helps to maintain faith in the fact that we each are more powerful than we think. We all have the ability to create the life we want. We just need to learn how to do it.
“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” – John Wooden
