I have always been interested in detox and cleanse and after reading a recent article, I was reminded of the numerous times, while growing up in Jamaica, my mother would call us for the dreaded “wash out!” The article pointed out that most of us “spring clean” our home at the start of spring, maybe it’s time to also consider a more personal cleaning, our body. I can definitely relate. Because of poor diet and poor digestion, most people are stopped up and tend to feel lousy.
Detoxification or detox is the process your body uses to get rid of undesirable substances. The body has its own extraordinary internal detoxification system and we need to maintain these three key organs by nourishing our body with the right nutrients.
- The Liver is our first line of defense against toxins. It acts like a filter in preventing toxic substances found in foods from passing into your bloodstream.
- The Colon has bacteria that produce both healthy and unhealthy chemicals. Our goal is to keep the colon flowing regularly as its main role is to flush out toxic chemicals before they can do harm.
- The Kidneys operates like clockwork, constantly filtering your blood and getting rid of toxins in the form of urine.
Many popular detox diets, especially those that involve extreme low-calorie fasting, can rob the body of important nutrients and place the body in starvation mode, which actually slows your metabolism. Some other downsides of many detox diets include dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, nausea and even colon damage.
According to a Harvard Health Publication, the human body can defend itself very well against most environmental insults and the effects of occasional indulgence. If you’re generally healthy, concentrate on giving your body what it needs to maintain its robust self-cleaning system, such as, a healthful diet, adequate fluid intake, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and all recommended medical check-ups.
Detox vs Cleanse
A detox or cleanse may help us head into summer feeling refreshed and ready for some fun, but remember to do your due diligence and always check with your doctor before you start any new treatments or supplements.
