Are you getting enough of the right nutrients for your body?
When I was initially diagnosed with diabetes I didn’t take it seriously. Now, I’ve made a commitment to eat healthily and manage my weight so I can avoid medication. I’ve also done a lot of research and completed a genetic test to help fortify my action plans. I made changes to the foods I eat, lowered my sugar intake, increase my daily quota of water and exercise, and take multi-vitamins regularly. The results are good. But there’re days, and sometimes weeks, when I’m off my game plan. Maintaining your nutrition and achieving a healthy lifestyle is an active, ongoing process.
We need to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to provide the nutrients our body needs. However, for most adults, we don’t consume the required amount of fruits and vegetables and much of the protein we consume is combined with saturated fat. Your diet should contain nutrient-dense foods that will provide the macronutrients, micronutrients, and phytonutrients your body needs to help fight illness and keep your bones, eyes, and vital organs working strong.
- Macronutrients: protein, fats, and carbohydrates – these are basic nutrition and are required for growth and energy.
- Micronutrients: vitamins and minerals – these work together with macronutrients. Our body doesn’t produce enough micronutrients on their own, so it must come from food or supplements.
- Phytonutrients: these are organic components found in plants that are considered important in promoting human health. In the U.S., 8 out of 10 adults are not meeting the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
It’s ideal to establish and maintain healthy habits early in life, but it’s never too late to start taking care of yourself, eating right, exercising and reducing your stress levels. Managing and maintaining the quality and quantity of foods we consume and staying active throughout our life cycle are essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” – Hippocrates
