Recently, I attended a class on grief and left the class with a new perspective. Grief is the psychological-emotional experience following a loss of any kind but is mostly associated with the loss of a loved one. Grief is a highly individualized process, with no specific timetable, and many people find that their lives are better after going through the grieving process.
Grief can be frightening. It’s emotional and eruptive but it can be a great teacher, and if we allow it, the process can help us look deep within ourselves. It can force us to face those elements of ourselves that are most troubling and cause us to question our identity, purpose, and the very meaning of our life.
When grief knocks, the expectation is to “be strong” and “bear up” but you can’t rush grief. It’s not an obstacle course that you endure and there’s no cure or fast way to get through it. Short-cuts will short-change the process and potentially create longer-term painful consequences and physical illnesses. There are no specific set of practices that will help everyone with the grieving process. We each develop creative ways to cope and work through it.
The grieving process is a time of transition and adjustment, so don’t judge your feelings. Allow your feelings to emerge and allow them to be valid in your mind. This will go a long way towards relieving tension and helping you stay on track towards your healing. Although the work of grief is never finished, over time we learn to integrate it into our lives and find ways to move forward.
“Don’t let the pains of one season overshadow the joys of the rest of the year. Try not to judge life by one difficult season; cherish instead the exceptional seasons given to you in love.” – Sec. Cerge Remonde
