The human body is incredibly complex but it is not a machine. This radical concept of the body as a machine started in the 1600s, and became more popular over the years. Although your body is made up of many parts and systems, you are not a machine.
Here are TEN amazing facts about your body♦:
- You have unique fingerprints. The human fingers are so sensitive, that if your fingers were the size of earth, you could feel the difference between a house and a car.
- You have over 60,000 miles of blood vessels inside your body, enough to circumnavigate the earth two and a half times.
- Nerve impulses travel to and from your brain at speeds of up to 250 miles per hour, faster than a Formula 1 racecar.
- When in love, your brain releases the same cocktail of neurotransmitters and hormones that are released by amphetamines. This leads to increased heart rate, loss of appetite and sleep, and intense feelings of excitement.
- Our muscles are actually incredibly more powerful than they appear to be. Your strength is limited to protect your tendons and muscles from harming themselves. This limitation can be removed during an adrenaline rush, during which some people have lifted boulders or even cars off themselves.
- We have the same amount of hairs on our body as a chimpanzee. Most are useless and so fine that they are invisible.
- The human eye is very sensitive with the equivalent of 576 megapixels. You have the ability to distinguish between 10 million different colors and read up to 1,000 words per minute. The focusing muscles in your eyes move around 100,000 times a day. To give your leg muscles the same workout, you’d need to walk 50 miles.
- In one day, your blood travels 12,000 miles around your body. That’s four times the distance across the US from coast-to-coast.
- Along with the five traditional senses of sound, sight, touch, smell and taste, humans have 15 “other senses.” These include balance, temperature, pain and time as well as internal senses for suffocation, thirst, and fullness.
- The human brain is only 2% of an adult’s body mass but uses 20% of the entire body’s oxygen and calorie intake.
Your body is amazing and keeping it healthy will be your greatest wealth. Although achieving optimal health isn’t easy, making just a few changes in your lifestyle can help you live a longer, healthier life. But there’s no quick fix, healthy living is a long-term commitment. Eating right, getting enough sleep, managing stress, avoiding unhealthy behaviors and managing your weight are great ways to improve your health and live a healthy lifestyle. Learn to think positively about your body and take ownership of your wellbeing.
“The best six doctors anywhere, and no one can deny it are: sunshine, water, rest, air, exercise and diet. These six will gladly you attend, if only you are willing. Your mind they’ll ease, your will they’ll mend, and charge you not a shilling.” – Wayne Fields
