I met an amazing lady recently, who inspired me to be more mindful of my attitude.
More than two years ago she was diagnosed with a very progressive, debilitating neurological disease but she had a great attitude and a lot of humor.
She’s an avid reader and was reading the Bible when I showed up at her door. She smiled easily, made jokes about her limitations and made me feel at ease.
As I got to know her more, she explained that she was very surprised when she was diagnosed, because her brother died from the same disease and it’s very rare that both children are affected by this illness.
Despite this, she made a decision to trust that God must have a reason for her illness, and now, every day she makes a conscious effort to be a source of inspiration to others.
Over the years, her disease has progressed to where she can no longer care for herself. She has lost the use of all her fingers except one in her left hand and she joking showed me how she uses the one finger to type and navigate the screen on her Kindle.
Since she spends most of her day reading, she has plans in place to continue doing so when she eventually loses the use of that one finger….. thanks to technology.
I was amazed by her and was in tears several times during our discussion.
She helped changed my perspective and reminded me of the importance of an attitude of gratitude.
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” Winston Churchill
It’s the way you interpret the things around you and the way you relate to others. Sometimes we forget how blessed we really are, and we end up taking things for granted and forget to be thankful. There are days when I’m so consumed by little irritations that I forget to be grateful for all that I have.
A positive attitude:
- Helps you cope more easily with the daily affairs of life.
- Brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worries and negative thinking.
- Bring constructive changes into your life, and makes you happier, brighter and more successful.
- Helps with stress management and will improve your health.
- Your inner beauty will shine through. Smiling, friendly, happy people are extremely attractive.
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” – Abraham Lincoln
Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean that you’ll keep your head in the sand and ignore life’s less pleasant situations.
Instead, a positive attitude helps you approach life’s unpleasantness in a more productive and positive way.
So, keep your chin up, smile as much as you can, and remind yourself that life is only as good as you make it.
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” Khalil Gibran
I look forward to hearing from you!!
