So…
I went for my annual check-up recently and my doctor went “Madea” on me!
I’ve been seeing her for the past 2 years
And at every visit, she’d remind me that I need to start taking medication for my diabetes.
Each time, however, I’d say No, and promised to do better with my diet, water intake, and exercise.
This time she was not pleased.
My weight and blood levels were not what we expected.
I’ve been off my game
Not drinking enough water
Eating way too much dinner
And missing out on my exercise regime.
Clearly frustrated, she brought up the subject of the medication again.
And I once again said Nooooo!
But I was not going to get off easy this time
Because she looked me straight in the eyes and said,
“Well, you need to lose 20 lbs.!”
I blurted out, “That’s impossible, Doc!”
She looked at me calmly and said,
“You’re being very negative today. If you really want to control your diabetes without medication, then you’ve got to make some changes.”
That’s when it hit me….
My belief is enabling me…. not helping me!
I could not see myself losing 20 pounds!!
My doctor went on to coach me, then referred me to the NPR series “The Fallacies of Fat.”
And recommended the book, Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease by Dr. Robert Lustig.
I was inspired.
Game on!
Sometimes our beliefs limit us and prevent us from making real change that could take us to the next level.
If your belief hinders your progress, then this is a clear sign that you’re dealing with one that is limiting you.
Limiting beliefs manifest themselves in different ways……..
Here are a few:
- When you make excuses.
- When you complain about things.
- When you indulge in negative thoughts.
- When you indulge in unhealthy habits.
- When you jump to conclusions and/or make assumptions.
- When you worry about failure or about making mistakes.
- When you worry uncontrollably for no apparent reason.
Limiting beliefs aren’t helpful, and they’re certainly not serving you well as you journey towards your goals.
The best thing to do when it comes to limiting beliefs is to ask yourself questions.
Questions such as:
- What resistance am I feeling inside when I think about achieving this goal?
- Why can’t I overcome certain challenges to achieve my goal? What is holding me back?
- What unhelpful habits or thoughts am I indulging in?
- What am I saying or doing to myself that is holding me back?
- What excuses do I tend to indulge in? What do these excuses mean? Why do I make them?
- Why do I think this is too hard or too difficult? What is stopping me?
- What stories do I tell myself about what I should or shouldn’t do, and about what should or shouldn’t happen?
Limiting beliefs often hide beyond conscious awareness.
So did deep and probe often.
“Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.” ―Mary Kay Ash
