Does your “American Dream” read something like this:
Go to college, get a job, get promoted, get married, buy a house, have kids, another promotion, family vacations, a bigger house, nicer vacations, retire at 65…golf or travel the world?.
That was very attractive to me, a 23-year-old recently migrated to NYC from Jamaica.
I still find it attractive…. but not so much now.
And if that’s what you want out of life, that’s great, go for it!
But, life doesn’t necessarily need to follow that prescribed course.
Even though it’s hard to reject conventional wisdom and set your own course
Here’s the good news: It can be done!!
Because it’s been done many times before.
Many have made the decision to quit high-paying and high-stress jobs to pursue a life of travel, go back to school, change
careers, or move overseas to experience different cultures.
Some of us stay put in unhappy jobs and circumstances because of unstable finances or a desire to act responsibly to the
people who depend on us.
That’s very noble in my book.
Life is different for each of us.
But….
If you lack fulfillment at work:
There’s incredible wisdom in keeping a healthy distance between your job and your sense of fulfillment.
Love your work, but not necessarily your job.
Define a personal mission and live it each day.
Make a specific goal to improve yourself, every single day.
Don’t be passive – take initiative.
Find ways to learn something new.
Build positive relationships.
Be grateful – it could be a lot worse.
If your goal is to get out of debt:
Establish realistic and achievable goals.
Curb your spending.
Don’t take on additional debt if you can avoid it.
Take a stand against debt and prioritize eliminating it from your life.
Pay off high-interest debts first.
Save, save, save.
Whatever your struggle is, it’s not going to be easy.
But you can still make changes to your life….. little by little.
All of us have the power to change our lives in profound ways.
But first…..
Figure out what is most important to you.
Figure out what, in your current life, is making you unhappy.
Then figure out how to make changes in your life that are meaningful.
It will take time, but knowledge is power.
And that power will keep you motivated and give you the strength you need to succeed.
Until next time…..
