When I applied to be an ER manager, I had no idea that there was a pandemic brewing.
Even after my multiple interviews, I remained clueless.
Then I was selected for the position, my start date set and, before anyone could say cheese, we were in full pandemic mode and gear!
It’s been 3 months since my official start date, and I had an unscheduled sit down with my director… my boss. A very knowledgeable and accomplished leader.
I read 2 books and completed a new manager course prior to starting, so I had a bunch of questions and a checklist.
All my plans went out the window when I started.
My entire service line leaders are amazing people. But we were in full pandemic mode and no one had time for my checklist.
While doing my impromptu 90-day evaluation with my director, he mentioned the book “FYI – For Your Improvement.”
Never heard of it. And I told him so.
Long story short, one week later he presented me with a copy. I was impressed. And promptly started to work on one of my weakest areas… delegating.
I’m not very good at it…. I prefer to “do it all” myself… but that’s not a good thing for my team.
Working on the ER frontline is hectic.
It’s exhausting…. mentally and physically….. and it’s easy to find an excuse NOT to do more.
But I made the decision to read, and learn, and study and complete my certification exam by the end of the year.
Some days are better than some, but I’m determined to stay focused and intentional.
How about you?
Will the end of the pandemic find you improved?
Your choices may be limited but if you look hard enough, you’ll find a few things to work on.
Make a list and get started. One at a time.
Remember, it takes 21 days or more to develop a new habit.
So, chop-chop!
