Did you know that you can super-charge your skin’s defense with the power of antioxidants?
An antioxidant is a substance that can stop or limit the damage to cells caused by free radicals. Our body uses antioxidants to stabilize the free radicals, protect cells, assist in skin repair and strengthen blood vessels.
All cells fall victim to the process of oxidation. Picture an apple turning brown – that’s oxidation at work. In humans, oxidation occurs 24 hours a day assisting with the birth and death of cells in our bodies. During this process, body chemicals are altered and some cells get damaged, which are then known as free radicals. Free radicals are also created by other factors, such as exercise, cigarette smoke, and air pollution.
Studies suggest that over time, free radicals can cause a chain reaction in your body that damages important body chemicals, DNA, and parts of your cells and cause signs of aging. Scientists also believe free radicals may contribute to diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Where are antioxidants found?
Nutrients found in fruits, vegetables and nuts act as antioxidants and help to counteract free radicals. The most common antioxidants are Vitamin A, C, E, and beta-carotene. Scientists now know that there are many phytonutrients that have antioxidant properties, such as flavonoids and phenols. These are available from a wide variety of sources. The best way to get antioxidants is by eating a diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seeds and nuts.
A Powerful Duo: Sunscreen + Antioxidant
Sunscreen will help prevent damage while antioxidants help cells repair themselves.
Your skin is exposed to environmental factors daily, which can lead to damage causing it to act and appear older, become discolored and uneven in texture, lose elasticity and become wrinkled. Sunscreen is a great defense against the harmful effects of the sun and helps keep your skin looking younger, longer.
