What’s the point in working hard toward a long and healthy life if you can’t enjoy it?
Everyone longs to be healthy and happy. But making the effort to balance what we must do with what we enjoy and choose to do can be difficult. Balanced living is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. This means considering all aspects of your life: relationships, work, health and fitness, and emotional well-being. Balanced living involves protecting your mental and emotional health, and taking steps to reduce stress.
Consider the following to create a balanced life:
- Take care of and nurture yourself. Making time for yourself is necessary so that you can keep up with all your responsibilities. All batteries get run down so recharge your body physically and mentally and make the commitment to enjoy some “you time” every day.
- Know what your priorities are. Balance does not entail cramming in every activity possible.
- Create an efficient mindset. Being happy gives you a better outlook on life, so you’re more prepared to tackle your tasks. Stress can keep you from enjoying life and can have a negative impact on your health.
- Expect the unexpected. Plan ahead, have a contingency plan and be alert and attentive. The road of life is filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. Uncertainty is inevitable, but the effects don’t have to be overwhelming if you mentally prepare for bumps or unexpected changes.
- Maintain a positive mental attitude. Don’t forget to laugh. It’s great for your health and can help to alleviate stress, boost brain health, lower blood pressure and improve your mood.
- You cannot accomplish anything if you’re unhealthy. So eat right and exercise. We should be eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, lean meats and poultry, and low-fat dairy products. Mentally, we feel more energized and ready to tackle the world after a good workout. The key is to find a workout that you enjoy, stick with it, and reap the ongoing benefits of a regular workout routine.
Eating well is good for your mental as well as your physical health and eating fruits and vegetables every day is key to optimal health. Supplements should be used to fill gaps, not replace a healthy diet.
You should fill gaps if:
- Your diet doesn’t have 5–9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
- You get 5–9 servings, but don’t eat a wide variety to ensure full health benefits.
- You often don’t have time to make nutritionally complete meals.
