Did you know that Ginkgo is one of the oldest living species of plant on earth?
Ginkgo biloba, also known as Maidenhair, has been used as a Chinese medicine for thousands of years and today, it is one of the top-selling herbal supplements in the United States. Ginko is a living fossil and, according to reports, it has been traced back nearly 300 million years making it one of the oldest surviving tree species on earth. Extracts are usually taken from the ginkgo leaf and are used to make tablets, capsules, or teas. Ginkgo is a prescription herb in Germany.
Research is still ongoing and more evidence is needed to support all the claims, but ginkgo is currently used for the treatment of numerous conditions. It is best known today as a way to potentially keep your memory sharp. So far, available evidence supports ginkgo for managing memory issues, dementia, anxiety, schizophrenia, and cerebral insufficiency. Evidence for other uses is either lacking or mixed.
Ginkgo biloba is also an antioxidant. Its leaves contain flavonoids and terpenoids, which are both antioxidants. Harmful particles called free radicals build up as you age, and may contribute to health issues. Antioxidants like those found in ginkgo fight off these free radicals and stop them from damaging DNA and other cells.
Although ginkgo is generally well tolerated, keep your health care providers informed about any complementary health approaches you use. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.
