Is balanced living possible? Is it a worthy goal?
Life is known to throw curveballs. Life sometimes knocks us down when we are already down! But, if we are not able to find balance we will miss out on the benefits and may suffer physical and/or emotional health consequences. When you create a balanced life, you feel calm, grounded and motivated.
Creating a balanced life is challenging. According to experts, balance involves maintaining health and wellness and requires having a positive outlook, focusing on good habits, and lowering stress. This is not always easy and may require an exceptional amount of time and resources. Whether we work, go to school or are retired, we all have responsibilities. There is always something that is still undone, or a family or career crisis that needs our immediate and undivided attention.
But, we should always strive to live a balanced life. One that involves, not just the absence of a disease or infirmity, but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. And, one that includes an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Ultimately taking the time to balance what we must do with what we enjoy and choose to do.
Things we can do to find balance:
- Take care of and nurture yourself. You cannot accomplish anything if you’re unhealthy. Get plenty of rest, exercise and eat properly. Be sure to allow quality time for yourself and your family and time for recreation.
- Know what your priorities are. Examine your goals and values and decide what is important; then set your boundaries. Balance does not entail cramming in every possible activity.
- Create an efficient mindset. Be organized and plan ahead. A to-do-list in a planner or other electronic/online apps can become valuable tools with practice. Connect regularly with like-minded people who recharge your batteries.
- Expect the unexpected. Some things will be out of your control. Learn to roll with the punches, rather than get stressed and upset. When things go back to normal take time to refresh and rejuvenate you.
A well-balanced life is essential for personal effectiveness and peace of mind. A healthy, happy mind can contribute to good health.
