A pike is a large fish that survives by eating smaller fish.
An experiment was done years ago where the pike was placed in a large fish tank.
Then several smaller fish were introduced into the tank, using a large, bottomless, glass jar.
Closing them off completely from the pike.
Of course, the pike didn’t know they were in a glass and immediately struck at the little fish.
The pike kept hitting the glass over and over, but soon gave up frustrated and “conditioned.”
And went to rest at the bottom of the tank, right next to the minnows.
After a while, the glass jar was lifted off the smaller fish, and they swam all around the pike and throughout the large tank.
The pike never tried again and died in that tank with its main source of food and survival right in front of it!
Are you like that pike?
Do you give up after a few tries? Several tries?
Most of us enjoy watching athletes.
We find them inspiring and we admire their tenacity.
But very few of us are willing to make a fraction of their commitment.
To endure the training, the sacrifice, the injuries, the loneliness, the pain, and the dark places.
Not many of us will ever compete at their level and we may never endure their kind of hardship.
After a while in any venture, here’s what WILL happen…
It begins to get tough.
You’ll hit a bump in the road.
Probably more than once.
You’ll take a step forward, and then something knocks you two steps backward.
Like the Pike, at this point, most people are ready to quit and give up on their dreams.
Maybe not die of starvation
But settling for mediocrity.
Here’s a fact…..
Dreams are valuable commodities.
They propel us forward, give us energy and make us enthusiastic.
But there’s no straight line to success.
You’re going to hit bumps in the road that will feel like mountains.
The thing to do at this point is to reaffirm that this is the right choice and not a wrong turn:
Is it really what you want?
“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” Steve Jobs
Are you ready to hustle?
“Hustle isn’t just doing the things you love all the time. Hustle is doing the things you don’t enjoy sometimes to earn the right to do the things you love.” Jon Acuff
Are you prepared to be in it for the long haul?
“You must participate relentlessly in the manifestation of your own dreams” Elizabeth Gilbert
Dreams do come with strings attached – hard work, persistence, and commitment.
When you take your dream seriously, it’s no longer a hobby reserved for a rainy day.
Instead, it now earns a time slot on your calendar and you show up to do the work.
Until next time…..
Don’t be like the Pike…..
Don’t give up on your dream!!
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
