Did you know your brain is made up of more than 100 billion nerves that communicate in trillions of connections called “synapses?”
Cistanche Tubulosa, commonly known as “Cistanche” is a parasite plant that thrives on the roots of its host in arid or semi-arid areas. This herb has no chloroplasts or roots and, therefore, it is not photosynthetic. It survives by absorbing nutrients from the roots of the plant host which enable it to beat the desert environment. It is mainly found in parts of northwest China and has been considered as a necessary tonic in the traditional Chinese medicines where the succulent stems were dried and used for medicinal purposes, as well as a potent sexual enhancement for men.
There are four commonly used types of the cistanche plant and their uses and benefits appear to be interchangeable. Modern pharmacology studies have since demonstrated that cistanche possesses broad medicinal functions and it has now gained popularity among herbalist worldwide. Studies suggest that cistanche has the following benefits:
- Fights fatigue
- Lower cognitive deficits
- Anti-aging
- Improve memory function and learning
- Hormone regulation
- Immunity
- Anti-inflammatory
- Promotion of bone formation
- Provides cell-protecting antioxidants to cellular health in the brain
Your brain is the most complex part of the human body, and memory can be problematic at any age. This 3-pound organ is the center intelligence, interpreter of the senses, initiator of body movement and controller of behavior. The brain is designed to receive information from the rest of the body, interpret the information and guide the body’s response to it. Keeping your brain nourished is very important and these supplements can help:
- Omega-3 fatty acids are important for cognitive function, memory, and behavioral function.
- Ginkgo biloba may be helpful for improving normal, age-related memory loss, and enhancing mental function in younger people.
- Cistanche may improve brain function including learning and short and long-term memory.
Eating well is good for your physical as well as your mental health and eating fruits and vegetables every day is key to optimal health. Supplements should be used to fill gaps, not replace a healthy diet.
You should fill gaps if:
- Your diet doesn’t have 5–9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
- You get 5–9 servings, but don’t eat a wide variety to ensure full health benefits.
- You often don’t have time to make nutritionally complete meals.
- You often choose convenient, processed foods over healthier options.
Also, remember to always consult with your doctor before trying any new supplements or treatments. If your doctor gives you the all-clear, chose supplements that are right for your health needs.
