Are you still trying to squeeze in as much as possible or have you decided to roll your unaccomplished goals over to the New Year?
“What if, rather than rushing towards the end of the year and contemplating what’s next, you stopped for a moment to reflect on ‘what’s been?’” This question jumped off the page at me and I flinched…. instinctively. This year was fraught with many ups and downs and some of my goals were not achieved. I’ve even lost ground on some of my big goals, especially to lose weight and keep it off. As I looked at the question for the third time, I decided to accept the challenge to reflect and celebrate another year of life, wisdom and resilience, and answer these three questions♦:
- What was my most gratifying accomplishment this year?
- What is the message in my biggest challenge?
- Who added joy to my life this year?
The common message in all of my struggles this year is “have faith.” Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with an old friend whose mantra is “it’s gonna be OK!” Little by little I began to see that a lot of my responses were negative and I was bordering on being more of a pessimist than an optimist. Instead of faith and hope, I was living with a lot of regrets and my outlook was being overshadowed by my past hurts and failures. As I reflected, I made a commitment to increase my faith, live my life to the fullest and avoid common regrets♦. I will have the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me; I will work smarter not harder; I will have the courage to express my feelings clearly and honestly; I will make the effort to stay in touch with more of my friends; and I will let myself to be happier.
In spite of the challenges, there were many gratifying accomplishments throughout the year and it’s easy to identify the many individuals who added joy to my life. I enjoy meeting and connecting with new people, and I’m always on the lookout for people with whom I can build stronger friendship and lasting relationship. I was honored to meet two beautiful couples recently, and we’ve shared many special moments so far. It’s really wonderful to be able to let go and laugh again.
Life is a choice. It’s YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.
