The pike is a large fish that survives by eating smaller fish.
An experiment was conducted years ago where the pike was placed in a large fish tank. Then several smaller fish were introduced into the tank but separated from the pike by keeping them within in a large, bottomless, glass jar. The jar was submerged to the bottom of the tank, closing them off completely from the pike.
Of course, the pike didn’t know this and immediately struck at the minnows. As the pike became hungrier, it made numerous unsuccessful attempts to eat the minnows, but only succeeded in battering its snout against the glass divider.
Slowly the pike realized that reaching the minnows was an impossible task, and simply gave up trying.
When the glass partition was removed, the pike surprisingly didn’t attack the minnows even though they swam freely around the tank.
The pike remained motionless.
It gave up trying and died in the tank with its main source of food and survival right in front of it!
Why?
The pike syndrome.
Are you like that pike?
Do you give up trying when things get rough?
The pike syndrome is all too common in our everyday lives.
We make assumptions or feel victimized by our environment, and fail to push past our self-imposed barriers and limitation.
One of the biggest problems with limiting beliefs is that you probably don’t even realize you have them.
You’re so stuck in your own ways that it’s almost impossible to imagine that other possibilities exist.
Isn’t it time to push past your limiting beliefs?
And stop indulging in self-sabotaging behaviors?
If yes….
Here are four lessons from the Pike Story:
- Be prepared for change – don’t assume that things will stay the same forever.
- Be open and flexible – don’t allow frustrating and negative experiences to keep you stuck.
- Don’t give up; try harder – challenges are part of the process. Get up, dust yourself off, and try again.
- Don’t let opportunities pass you by – yes, sometimes the door will be closed. But we miss a lot of new opportunities when we chose to stare at that closed door, instead of deciding to push forward.
Like the pike, we may have smashed our noses against the glass ceiling or wall a few times and stopped trying.
But……
“If you want small changes in your life, work on your attitude. But if you want big and primary changes, work on your paradigms.” -. Steven Covey
Let go of your limiting beliefs and try again!
