Do you know what the most difficult part of studying to improve yourself is?
Personal application.
It’s easy, most of the time, to agree with the information especially when it relates to an area in your life or a struggle that you want to overcome.
But putting it into practice can be a real challenge.
Here’s one suggestion…..
Write out the application using these four characteristics:
1. First, it needs to be personal.
This means making it about you. Not your spouse, your kids, your neighbor, or your coworker. Your life is the only one you can change. So start your application with the word “I will.” Not “we” or “you.”
2. Second, it needs to be practical.
Whether it’s an entire project or a simple action step, make it something that you can actually do.
3. Third, it needs to be possible.
If you start out expecting to overcome your issue in a single attempt, you’ll get discouraged if you fail.
4. Fourth, it needs to be provable.
Every goal needs a target date. It helps you focus and gives you something to work toward. A time-bound goal will usually answer these questions: When? and What can I do today?
Whenever you set out to accomplish anything, personal or professional, it’s important to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Anyone can set goals, but if it lacks realistic timing, chances are you’re not going to succeed.
“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.” Bill Copeland
