I had a meeting with a new personal coach recently and within 15 minutes of getting to know me, he helped me pinpoint one of my major roadblocks: I was complacent. The very next day Darren Hardy, the motivational speaker, explicitly conveyed the dangers of complacency in a darrendaily.com morning mentor video. I felt double tapped!!
Am I really complacent?
Prior to this encounter with my mentors, I would have said ‘HELL NO!’ But the double tap was profound, so I did some introspection. According to the dictionary♦, complacency is a “feeling of quiet pleasure or security; being self-satisfied or smug about an existing situation while often unaware of the potential danger.” My mentors also explained that complacency moves in slowly like a fog, then it blankets and suppresses our potential……. often without us realizing it.
I learned that complacency spearheads my resistance to change. When I’m complacent, I begin to tell myself that my current situation is “good enough,” and allow fear of the unknown to confine me to my comfort zone; relying on things to stay the same.
My voice of complacency says:
- “Yea, but……”
- “Why bother…..”
- “I’m too busy……”
- “There’s always tomorrow……”
That’s not the way I want to live…… truly live. I know that things will never stay the same. If I’m not growing and moving forward, I’m going backward.
When we become complacent we settle…….. unwilling to pursue our dreams or move to fertile ground where our greater potential lies and a grand adventure awaits. Our rational mind knows that we need to take specific actions in order to achieve our goals, but our emotional brain begins to relax our drive and distract us from doing what’s important now (our W.I.N factor). Our emotions are a critical component to our success. When we no longer “feel” the thrill of going after our dream, the grim reaper of complacency has already begun to degrade our passion.
Don’t let routine and complacency rob you of your dream and take your life away.
“It’s in those moments when we’re striving, when we’re driving, when we’re reaching for something new, that we feel most spirited and feel most alive.” – Darren Hardy
