One morning last week, I walked into my 77-year-old patient’s room at around 530am and said…..
Mr. D., I have some medicine for you.
He said brightly,
Oh great! Maybe when I leave here I’ll get my sex life back…
He caught me totally off guard!!
So I gave him a look…. then laughed.
He took it as invitation to proceed and asked,
Do you want to hear about my sex life?
Trying to be a sport I turned around, looked at him and said….
Ok.
He looked at me and said nothing
After a few minutes, I said….. well?
He stared at me deadpan and said,
That’s it….. SILENCE… my sex life is silent.
I was rolling with laughter
At 5:30am.
He made me laugh… which made him happy….
Because I got about 2 more jokes out of him before I left his room
Smiling and grateful
That I get to do this for a living.
It’s not always peachy… some nights are really stressful and hard.
And the 1-hour drive home after a 12 hr night shift is no easy task either.
But I’m very grateful, that after 8 months of trying, I got the opportunity to do what I wanted.
Eventually, our journey towards our dreams and goals gets challenging and we’re tempted to turn back.
But who said it’s supposed to be easy?
What if…..
The work you’re doing right now isn’t just a line on your resume. Instead… it’s an experience…. a lesson that, if learned properly, will play an irreplaceable role in your life… years later?
I challenge myself with this question often.
Now I’m challenging you….
It’s easy to be happy when things are going well. But we need to remind our self of this question when things are so-so.
Because……
The valuable lessons…. good or bad…. that you’re learning now may very well be preparing you to unlock a new level of success in your life.
So lean into it and embrace it……
Growing pains are a part of the process if you want to do something amazing!
Have a great week!!
From the heart of a Nurse….
