You turn it into something good!
“The final proof of greatness lies in being able to endure criticism without resentment.” ~Elbert Hubbard
Criticisms can pop up anywhere.
At some point in your life you’ll be criticized, either personally or professionally, and at times it will be difficult to accept.
But most of us react to criticism in one or more ways that do more harm than good:
- By instantly defending ourselves or action
- Go in the offense and attack the critic
- Go into denial
- Or shift the blame and point fingers.
Poor reaction to criticisms comes naturally.
We’re humans.
But sometimes our reaction is worse than the remark itself.
I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but I’ll remind you….
When you react you’re on the defensive and your emotion is in control.
Here’s what you should do instead…..
Respond.
Responding is a conscious choice.
It has thought and reasoning and is guided more by logic and less by emotion.
And here’s a bonus….
When you respond properly to criticism, it loses its power to hurt you.
Initially, criticism is like getting an unexpected bucket of water thrown into your face.
But although it’s shocking, there’s nothing life-threatening about it.
Learn to respond and turn the remark into something good.
Here’s how……..
Analyze the remark and decide if there’s some truth to it or its gross exaggeration, spite, or downright inaccurate.
Not all criticism is bad.
But carefully consider the source.
Was the remark made by someone qualified and experienced to pass that judgment?
People are always going to criticize you.
From your work to your actions to your looks.
There are people who will try to tear you down at every corner because it helps them feel better about themselves.
Many of them have problems and are lost and misguided.
No matter what you do, there will be people in this world who will seethe on the inside, just because of who you are.
At the end of the day….
However negative their words may be, hold onto positivity and tangible reminders that you are of worth.
Then use the negativity as fuel for your fire rather than allow it to burn away your confidence.
Until next time…..
