Here’s a scenario….
You’re invited to a party and as soon as you stroll in, you’re introduced to someone and you begin chatting.
Pretty soon you realize you’ve forgotten something….. the other person’s name!!
Sounds familiar?
Did you know that…
90% of business people forget the name of the person they’ve been introduced to in eight seconds?
Wow!
Wanna know why?
We listen at a rate of 500 words per minute and speak at 100-125 words per minute.
So, our minds tend to wander with all that empty space left to fill when we’re listening.
Sadly, many of us today are great “Talkers” and poor “Listeners.”
Here’ss a fact:
To become better communicators, we need to become better listeners!
This, however, takes time and practice, intent and commitment.
But it’s worth the investment.
Because listening is truly the highest compliment.
Here are 3 Tips to Become a Great Listener
First….
Learn to ask great open-ended questions, then really listen to the responses. Fyi…. the person asking the questions is the one who’s actually leading the conversation.
Second….
Briefly summarize and paraphrase what you hear. This ensures that you truly understand what you hear and sends a message to the other person that you’re really listening.
Third…..
Listen with your heart; listen with your eyes and your intuition. Be consistently compassionate and let your humanity shine through.
Finally…..
Show respect, be considerate and be courteous.
We all have a deep need to have a voice and to have that voice understood.
Every single person on this planet has a burning desire to be treated well.
I’ll leave you with a quote from Leo F. Buscaglia:
“Stop listening with the intent to respond and start listening with the intent to understand. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
Until next time…..
I look forward to hearing from you!!
