How often do you say “Yes” to opportunities that seem a bit off of “normal?”
Daniel and his twin sister Emma (age 9) have come to my door consistently every evening to see if my son, David (age 16) could play. They had never played with David before and the first time Daniel came to the door it was a “cold call.” They were polite and eager.
Sometimes David was at work, sometimes he was sleeping and sometimes he was doing homework. But every time, the end result was a “no” type response. They didn’t show defeat with any of the “no” responses they received.
In fact, a few times they tried to set an appointment! “Ok. What time could you play tomorrow?” They didn’t ask a yes/no follow up question. They went with the assumed “yes” and tried for the close with setting a date and time. It took them 13 days of daily doorbell ringing to get a positive result. Tonight David went out and played basketball with them.
Marlon came home and joined in on the game. Big grins all around and lots of fun.
There are lessons in this story about persistence as well as lessons of saying “yes” to something that feels a bit weird. It’s not every day that a 16-year-old gets asked to play outside by two 9 year-olds.
So be persistent in going after your dreams, big or small, and make sure to consider saying “yes” to a few weird feeling things too.
I bet you’ll end up with a smile on your face!
I look forward to hearing from you!!
