Failure is scary.
If you’re like many people, there’s probably a goal you’ve set, but haven’t really made much progress on lately.
And, more than likely you have a New Year’s resolution that you’ve already forgotten about
Or a dream that feels too hard to hold on to.
Whatever it is that you’re pursuing,
It’s really tempting to give up at times.
But just because you feel tired, frustrated, or disappointed doesn’t mean you should give up.
If…..
- Your goals have changed.
- The process doesn’t align with your values.
- The reward isn’t worth it.
- You’ve dug yourself into a hole.
- The risks outweigh the benefit.
It may be time to walk away.
But giving up on something that you’ve wanted for a long time is painful.
And this has kept many people stuck in jobs, relationships, or promises that aren’t good for them.
Quitting your goals shouldn’t be a decision you take lightly, nor one that you make out of haste.
So before you do, ask yourself a few questions:
1. Are you pursuing the wrong goal?
Choose goals aligned with your values and true priorities.
2. Are you holding on to the wrong goal just to prove you’re not a quitter?
Don’t fall into the trap of sticking with something that’s not authentic or not working for you simply because you don’t want to quit.
3. Do you need to break it into smaller, more bite-sized action steps?
You set yourself up for failure if you’re working on too many goals at once. If the goal is really big, break it up into smaller pieces and extend your timeline.
Not everything in life will go as planned.
Sometimes you really need to take a step back and re-evaluate your plans and goals.
And at times, you’ll need to scrap it all together.
After considering it carefully…..
And decide it’s time to move on,
Instead of thinking of it as quitting, think of it as making room for the right goal.
The one that is more authentic to you.
When done strategically, abandoning the pursuit of a goal may be a much healthier approach than perseverance.
After you make the decision to abandon a goal
Bury it, mourn it, then move on.
Don’t spend time ruminating.
And let go of self-pity and self-blame.
Then direct your energy, hope, and enthusiasm toward new ideas, new projects, and new goals.
Rediscover who you are and design your own ladder.
Choosing to walk away doesn’t mean you’re a failure.
Until next time…..
“If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.”― Stephen R. Covey
