Happy Fourth of July!!
Did you know that three U.S. presidents died on July 4th?
Known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, we celebrate July 4, 1776, as the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But the Continental Congress didn’t decide to declare independence on July 4, 1776, it was originally declared on July 2, 1776. The final wording of the Declaration of Independence was completed on July 4, 1776.
More 4th of July facts…..
- The handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence with the date of July 4, 1776, was later signed in August and is now on displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
- No celebration took place the first 15 or 20 years after the Declaration was written.
- In the1820s and 1830s, printed copies of the Declaration began to circulate with the date July 4, 1776, listed at the top.
- John Adams, 2nd U.S. president, and Thomas Jefferson, 3rd U.S. president both died on July 4, 1826.
- Their deaths may have helped to promote the idea of July 4 as an important date to be celebrated.
- In 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas.
- Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and further legislation about national holidays, including July 4, was passed in 1939 and 1941.
- In 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees.
- Philadelphia held the first annual commemoration of independence on July 4, 1777.
- NYC has the biggest fireworks display in the U.S.
The fourth of July remains an important national holiday and a symbol of patriotism. It has become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occasion for fireworks, family get-togethers, and outdoor barbecues.
