“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” ― John Lubbock
Finding a balance between work, rest, and play will help us have greater fulfillment in our life. Without sufficient rest, you wear yourself out. Without the down time, you’ll ultimately run down and suffer from poor health, physically and mentally. When that happens, you’re no good to yourself or others. Find time to do nothing. Make time to rest and renew your body, mind, and spirit. Spiritual wellness will add meaning and purpose to your life.
With enough rest, you’ll have more energy, mental clarity, patience and resilience for the hard times.
- Slow down: never making time to be still can lead to exhaustion. Allow for some “empty” spaces in your day so you can take a break. Remind yourself that if it doesn’t get done today, it’s OK.
- Enjoy leisure time: everyone needs time away from the daily stressors. Make time to regroup and relax. You’ll reap the benefits when you make leisure time a priority. You can’t have a happy life if you don’t do things that you enjoy.
- Take time off: taking a day off can improve your creativity. Practice disconnecting from your everyday routines. Have times when you turn off your devices and just savor the moment. Take time to live in the present, rather than thinking so much about the future or the past.
With all the things we have to do and the vast amount of options for consumption, most of us feel like we’re always on the go and have more to do and little time to do it. But, don’t wait until you’re at the point of collapse. When you take a break and unwind, you reset yourself physically. You’ll feel refreshed, ready to get back to the drawing board and ready to reestablish your priorities. Appreciating, enjoying, and savoring life doesn’t just happen. So, put your feet up, take a load off and chill.
“Rest time is not waste time. It is economy to gather fresh strength. It is wisdom to take occasional furlough. In the long run, we shall do more by sometimes doing less.” – Charles Spurgeon
