Before the onset of modern medicine, life was short. In 1845 a 5-year old could expect to live 55 years. Today a 5-year old can expect to live 82 years or longer. Globally, the number of people alive at age 100 is projected to increase 10-fold by 2050.
“During the Roman Empire, Romans had an approximate life expectancy of 22 to 25 years. In 1900, the world life expectancy was approximately 30 years and in 1985 it was about 62 years. Today, one out of every four 65-year-olds will live past age 90, and one out of 10 will live past age 95.” – SSA.gov♦
Food supply and nutrition, health and hygiene are three big reasons why people are living increasingly longer lives. Although the advancement in medicine and increased access to health care have made living longer a reality, we still continue to search for elixirs and potions to extend our youthfulness and longevity. Billions of dollars are spent annually on anti-aging goods such as skin care products, anti-aging technologies, and dietary supplements.
In 2015, the top 5 countries with the highest life expectancy were♦:
- Monaco – 89.52 years
- Japan – 84.74 years
- Singapore – 84.68 years
- Macau – 84.51 years
- San Marino – 83.24 years
On the list, Canada was number18, France at 19, the UK at 33, the USA at 43 and Jamaica at 127. Chad had the lowest life expectancy of just 49.81 years.
Food is the best source of nutrients.
Eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low-fat dairy and healthy fats, in conjunction with regular physical activity, will keep your body healthy and functioning well. Our bodies use over 45 vitamins and minerals per day and most people aren’t getting enough. Dietary supplements have the potential to fill some of those gaps, but should not be used to replace a healthy diet.
You should fill gaps if:
- Your diet doesn’t have 5–9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
- You get 5–9 servings, but you don’t eat a wide variety to ensure full health benefits.
- You often don’t have time to make nutritionally complete meals.
- You often choose convenient, processed foods over healthier options.
Eating well is good for your mental and physical health and eating fruits and vegetables every day is key to optimal health. Talk to your doctor before starting any supplements.
