The good times take care of themselves, but how do you react when things aren’t going so well?
A setback is an unanticipated or sudden negative change in one’s progress. It can take any form and can come at any time. Failures can be demoralizing; they can distort our perceptions and set us up to fail again. Many of us end up either giving up or perform poorly if we persist.
Some people, despite knowing strategies that can help them move beyond the setback, incorrectly succumb to feelings of lack of control and avoid taking action and applying these vital strategies.
Steps to overcome setbacks:
- Control your reaction: No matter what the setback is, your reaction is one thing that you can control at all times.
- Be realistic: If you expected life to be rosy, to always succeed at the first attempt and to never face any setback then you will certainly end up feeling very disappointed.
- Develop strategies: Setbacks will happen so learn how to deal with them and overcome them. Daily mental mindset training can help strengthen you for these rough patches.
- Learn from your mistakes: Accept that there’s value in learning from an endeavor, no matter what the outcome is. Making a list or using a journal can be helpful.
- It’s a journey: You will encounter success and failure on the same path; they are not separate roads.
- Celebrate your effort: Applaud yourself for taking the step in the first place.
- Confine your conclusions: Don’t let a setback overshadow your entire life. Confine your expressions to each attempt.
You will hit a rough patch from time to time. So, instead of dwelling on the circumstances think about how you can achieve a better outcome in the future. Our mind’s way of responding to failure and setbacks is misleading and potentially damaging. We have to find ways to assert control and override the defeatism we feel.
Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward. – Henry Ford
In other words, don’t expect to always be great. Disappointments, failures and setbacks are a normal part of the lifecycle of a unit or a company and what the leader has to do is constantly be up and say ‘we have a problem, let’s go and get it’. – Colin Powell
You know, everybody has setbacks in their life, and everybody falls short of whatever goals they might set for themselves. That’s part of living and coming to terms with who you are as a person. – Hillary Clinton
