Oregano is a herb with a strong scent and flavor and is a sub-specie of the mint family. This popular herb whose name means “mountain joy” is available throughout the year.
There are several Oregano plant species that are found on most continents. It is considered an important culinary herb, used for the flavor of its leaves, but its medicinal use dates back to the ancient Greek and Roman empires where the leaves were used to treat illnesses such as skin sores and aching muscles and also used as an antiseptic. The active compound Carvacrol found in Oregano is responsible for the biological activities of oregano.
Research continues but according to studies, Carvacrol the active compound of Oregano, offers a wide range of health benefits including protective effects for the liver, antioxidant, and activity against harmful organisms. Oregano is also used in traditional medicines for ailments such as asthma, cramping, diarrhea, and indigestion.
The popular Oil of Oregano is distilled from the flowers and leaves of the Oregano plant and is considered to be one of nature’s most powerful antibiotics. The Oregano compound breaks through the protective outer cell membrane of the bacteria and helps the immune system take action against viruses, fungi, and parasites. It is also reported that bacteria does not develop resistance to essential oils, an advantage over antibiotics.
Oregano contains essential phytonutrients; these are naturally occurring chemicals in plants that help fight off insects, resist disease, promote healthy growth, and enhance survival. The American Medical Association recommends that all adults take one multivitamin daily. This is true even if you already eat a diet rich in fresh, whole, natural foods, because the foods you consume often don’t supply all the vitamins and minerals you need, at the recommended levels.
