“Influence may be the highest level of human skills.” – Unknown
I read this story recently:
“A woman was driving and got caught in a terrible blizzard.
She was frazzled but felt better as she followed a huge snow plow.
It’s what her father would do, she told herself. So she followed carefully.
Suddenly the big plow stopped. The driver got out, walked over and tapped on her window.
She opened the window, and he asked why she was following him.
She explained that her father always told her to find a plow and follow it if ever she was in a blizzard.
The driver grunted, and as he walked away said, ‘Well, alright, I’ve finished the Walmart lot. Let’s head over to K-Mart next.’”
Following the snow plow was safe, but where did it get her?
The people in your life will influence you either positively or negatively. To our children, we may be wise protectors or fed-up disciplinarians. And to our co-workers, we may be inspiring leaders or complaining gossips. But some people are simply toxic, complaining constantly, gossiping mercilessly, and may even purposely sabotage others.
So, who are you following? …… to where? ….and why?
Check the habits and results of the influencers in your life and see if they’re heading in the direction you want to go. It’s quite easy when we’re feeling low to spiral even lower under the influence of someone else’s negativity.
“You don’t have to be a “person of influence” to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they’ve taught me.” – Scott Adams
