When was the last time you took a vacation and came back fully rested, renewed, and refreshed?
According to a study by the U.S. Travel Association, Americans are terrible at taking all of their allotted vacation days.
That was true again in 2016, with 54% of employees ending the year with unused time off, collectively sacrificing 662 million vacation days!!
Wow!!!
Another study also reports that America ranks No. 1 in depression and mental health problems.
We,re experiencing burnout, reduced productivity, diminished creativity, failed relationships, stress or stress-related ailments in record levels.
So why are we NOT taking time off?
The sad reason is fear.
People fear that they’ll be replaced
Fear getting behind on their work
Fear that no one will do the work while they’re gone
And fear of not meeting their goals.
According to the studies, only 23% of employees are taking all of their eligible time off. And when they do, they aren’t 100% vacationing. Two-thirds continue to work.
But taking time off have significant value.
In addition to higher productivity levels, stronger workplace morale, greater employee retention, and significant health benefits, when you take time off it helps you:
- Recover. If you don’t give yourself time to recover, you’re actually be tearing yourself down and weakening your body.
- Refuel. Even a machine, an automobile, and a jet plane need to stop and REFUEL.
- Regain control. Like the pressure cooker, when we are at full boil, it doesn’t take much for us to blow our lid.
- Improve Your Mood and Attitude. When we clear the frenetic energy from our minds and bodies it will dramatically improve our mood and attitude.
- Give you Strength of Presence. Taking the needed time off will help you regain your bearings and allow you to fully be there, wherever that is—at the office or with your family.
Vacations are a great way to gain new experiences. However, the majority of us who do take a vacation come back bushed or exhausted.
Don’t treat your vacation like it’s a job, where you manage to run through 17 palaces, 24 museums and 11 amusement parks in 8 days.
Make time for rest.
Rest renews, rebuilds, and rewires our brains and bodies, which can make us look better, feel younger, get healthier.
Get enough sleep and make time for people.
The most powerful and enjoyable memories frequently involve relationships and new experiences.
