Last week, I walked into my patient’s room at the start of the shift and introduced myself.
As we got to talking, my patient held her forehead and said,
“Wait…. what’s your last name?”
I told her
Then she said, “I hired you for this job!”
Taken aback… I spun around to look at her….
Surprised and immediately excited!!
We started swapping notes and, lo and behold, she was my recruiter.
She remembered my name because of the story I sent her!!!
Not sure if you kept up with my earlier blogs….
But it took me over 9 months to land a job in the hospital.
I’ve been a nurse for over 30 years and I have a Master’s degree in nursing
But that did not matter to most…. I had no recent hospital experience…..
I did not work in a hospital setting for over 6 years.
It was disheartening…. but I did not give up.
After completing an online interview with a recruiter in Texas, the following day I got an email from a local recruiter (now my patient), inviting me to an upcoming job fair.
I recognized the email address as her direct email and took the opportunity to respond to her directly…..
With my story…..
Where I was trained, what I had done over the past 30 years, where I was currently working and what brought me to the decision to return to the hospital setting.
I highlighted my medical mission trips and shared the impact it has had on my life……. to the point of me wanting to be more and do more.
She responded that same day!
And scheduled an interview with a manager 2 days later.
The rest is history.
If you know me well, you’ve seen me excited…..
I was pretty excited at what was happening!
What are the odds???!!
But I had to reign in my excitement…. given her circumstances.
I was able to quietly express my sincere gratitude to my patient…. in person…. and share the changes in my life since our last email.
She was very gracious….
Said all she did was get me through the door….. the rest was up to me.
How sweet!!!
The coolest part is this….
As we continued to talk, I explained that a friend recently passed her RN board exams and was looking for a new grad position.
My patient asked me to give my friend her email address, and she’ll see what she can do!!
How cool is that?
I was amazed!!!!
Two things….
Never give up on your dreams.
Give firsts.
