The truth isn’t always flattering
So most people never make it to that step.
And if we do, we don’t always know what to do with it.
This is where I fumble most of the time….
As a nurse, I have great assessment skills.
And they serve me well in my career.
But it’s another matter in my personal life.
I still struggle with telling myself the truth about certain things
And I find myself making excuses
Or placing blame.
One of my mentors said,
The reality is….
“The truth is the only thing that will empower you to breakthrough to your highest potential. Whether it is the truth about that bad habit, the truth about a relationship, or the truth about your circumstances, acknowledging it is freeing.” – Valorie Burton
Yes, the truth is freeing
But it’s easier said than done.
Because here’s what it takes to face the truth:
Courage.
And I’m a coward when it’s time to talk…. or even think…. about my failed marriages.
But I’m planning on getting married again
So I’ve been working on it…..
Working on being courageous and addressing my issues.
Needless to say….
It’s a work in progress
But I’m really pleased with my progress so far!!
Here’s what I do:
I take a deep breath, look myself in the mirror
And fill in the rest of this sentence:
I hate to admit it, but _________________________________.
Ouch!
Go ahead…
Give it a try….
Fill in the rest of this sentence in a way that’s true for you right now:
I hate to admit it, but _________________________________.
Perhaps your career is going really well most of the time, yet you have a nagging feeling it is time for a change.
Or maybe your relationship looks great from the outside, but you have a nagging feeling that something isn’t quite right.
Or maybe someone pointed out a problem with your child, and it makes you feel defensive because you’re trying to be a good parent.
Whatever it is….
Telling yourself the truth is a catalyst for change.
It’s also a chance to be vulnerable enough to ask for help or look for creative solutions.
Believe it or not….
If you want to go to the next level, you’ve got to be willing to bring to light the challenges you’d rather ignore.
You need to muster the courage to face those things you’d rather sweep under the carpet.
Because it’s in the process of stepping outside your comfort zone that you stretch and grow.
And the courage and wisdom you develop in the process will take you to a new and more powerful way of being.
So……
What is it that you need to address that you’ve been putting off?
The first step to getting unstuck is to tell yourself the truth.
Until next time…..
I look forward to hearing from you!!
