Whether you like it or not……
You’re writing your obituary every day by the way you live your life and by the people and things you give the most value to in your life.
I read recently that, Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, was reading the newspaper one morning when he turned the page and discovered his own obituary inside.
He was shocked!
His brother had died but instead of writing his obituary, the newspaper had published Alfred’s by mistake.
The obituary read, “The merchant of death is dead”.
Nobel was taken aback by the way in which the world was going to remember him after his death.
So he set out to change it… and did!
Today, he is NOT remembered as the merchant of death, but as the creator of the Nobel Prizes, and as a great humanitarian.
Here’s a challenge….
Write your obituary.
Give a true account of your life to date or ask a friend or family member who knows you well to do it for you.
Then, look over your obituary and ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this how I want to be remembered?
- Am I satisfied with the direction in which my life is heading?
- Am I happy with the legacy that I’m creating?
- What’s missing from my life?
Writing your obituary now gives you an opportunity to make changes so you can live your life more intentionally.
It also gives you the opportunity to re-direct your course, and veer away from any potential future regrets.
Here are some things to consider:
Know who you are.
Know what you want to do with your life.
Know your unique contribution.
Constantly monitor your thoughts and actions.
So, write your obituary.
It can give you clarity, direction, understanding and a great sense of purpose.
When you’re truly doing it, you’ll recognize it.
Go live it!
