Life is full of uncertainties.
And you can’t always control the unfortunate circumstances in your life but you can have a plan in place should one occurs.
Think about it….
Who will inherit your property when you die?
Who will take care of your family if you’re not able to do so?
What kind of medical treatment would you like to receive if you become critically ill?
These are some of the questions that should be answered in your plan…. your Advance Directives.
“Advance Directives” is really an umbrella term that is used to talk about a collection of documents that communicate your wishes and designate someone to speak on your behalf should you be unable to.
These include a Healthcare Power of Attorney, Financial Power of Attorney, POLST Form, Living Will, Last Will and Testament, and Living Trust.
Living Will – convey your wishes regarding medical treatment
POLST, or Physicians Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment – an extension of your Living Will and applies to situations where “life-sustaining treatment” is needed.
Durable Power of Attorney – grants decision-making authority to another person or persons.
Last Will and Testament – a legal document that names one or more persons to manage your estate after death. This must go through probate in court.
You may have heard about all the above but have you considered a Social Media Will?
Social media is a part of daily life, so what happens to your online identity and content when you die?
USA.gov advises us to appoint a trusted person to act as our online executor. That person will need all passwords and a clear statement about how you’d like each of your accounts handled after death.
Accounts, such as email or Facebook that are left unattended are often at risk of being hacked and misused.
You should also stipulate in your will that the online executor should have a copy of your death certificate.
Don’t make the mistake of waiting “until later” to set up these documents….. tomorrow is not promised.
Advance directives are not because you have a serious illness, but because you have a family.
Creating your Advance Directives may seem like a mountainous task.
But as difficult as it may seem, it’s much more stressful during a crisis or after death.
