If you asked me, I would tell you that I’ve suffered greatly over the course of my life.
Some of the suffering…… definitely were self-imposed
Because I can be hard-headed at times.
As a nurse though, I know that there are many out there who are worse off.
There are people who, every day, wrestle daily with emotional pain.
Some of them stuck in a bad way and unable to make a step forward or backward.
A while back, I admitted a young man in his late 40s to the hospital where I was working.
He had, what we call in the medical field, multiple comorbidities
Basically…. a lot of medical problems including depression.
His mother was his only caregiver and she was overwhelmed.
It took her one week of begging and cajoling to get him to the hospital for some much-needed treatment.
He was not happy when I met him.
Were it not for his mother’s presence, he would not have answered any of my questions.
But by the end of my shift, we had developed a semblance of a patient-nurse relationship and I was able to get some of his treatment done.
The next day, at the start of my shift, we chatted about cars and the TV show, Law & Order.
But within 3 hours, I was hitting the code blue button and the emergency team crowded into his hospital room.
In a few minutes, he was gone.
Only minutes before he was talking to me.
One of my friends wrote this on social media recently, and it echoes my feelings
No matter what you’ve been through or going through find a way to turn it into something good
Choose to see adversity as a teacher
Here are a few basic facts…..
- Life is short. Make every day count.
- It’s not going to be peachy all the way and the roads are not paved with gold.
- It will get painful and it will hurt for sure. That’s life. So stop trying to deny or suppress your challenges. It won’t work well. It may even create additional suffering.
Here’s the upside……
Much of the personal growth people make is prompted by pain.
When faced with adversity, you have a choice:
You can let your pain motivate you to build impenetrable walls around your heart.
Or….
You can choose to respond with self-compassion and open yourself to the care offered by others.
Every day is a gift but it comes with a tremendous amount of responsibilities.
- First of all, accept responsibility for your life. It’s only you who will get you where you want to go. No one else will.
- Whatever you’re going through, know that you have a unique gift; something special that only you are capable of bringing to life.
- Don’t give up on yourself. Even if it feels like things are not going your way, and even if others don’t acknowledge your brilliance.
- Live a life that has meaning and value to you.
- Enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Laugh, love, explore and make a difference wherever you are.
- Don’t miss out on your own life. Do something every day that reminds you of being fully alive.
Be determined to enjoy your life in small as well as big ways.
Until next time…..
